Having worked in the local area for many years, we’ve seen many businesses struggling as a result of rushing the process of hiring their first employee. Struggling to afford staff costs, not having the right documentation, and choosing the wrong person for the job are some of the biggest mistakes.
enlightenHR’s Alison Benney said, “Over the years I’ve seen a lot of business owners make some bad decisions when it comes to hiring staff.
“But it’s particularly problematic when they’re making their very first hire.
“Often, business owners realise they need another pair of hands, but don’t realise there’s a lot more to employing someone than paying their wage.”
Alison advises business owners to create a well-thought-out plan before they advertise an available role.
She said: “After you’ve considered affordability, you should take some time to consider exactly what you’d like your employee to do, the hours you’d need them to work, and the skills and characteristics they’d ideally have.
“That makes creating a job description a lot simpler, which then makes writing a job advert easier.
“But it doesn’t stop there. You should also think carefully about where you place the ad, what your interview process will be, and of course, how you’ll onboard your new employee to get them off to the best start.
“It may sound obvious, but this is all skipped far too often, which leads to poor hiring decisions, and a high employee turnover.”
She added, “Local businesses need to make sure they’re making good decisions right now so that they thrive in today’s climate.
“That’s why I’ve written a step-by-step guide to hiring your first employee, to give to business owners for free.”
